Sazerac pays $2.3M for Murfreesboro land to build $86M distillery

Sazerac purchased 55 acres for nearly $2.3 million Tuesday to build an $86 million distillery approved by the Murfreesboro City Council, records show.

The New Orleans area whiskey manufacturer bought land near the end of Asbury Road off Florence Road from Rick Smith, according to a document from the Rutherford County Register of Deeds.

Sazerac plans to open the distillery by early 2020, and the improved property will be added to the tax rolls, said Rob Mitchell, the Rutherford County property assessor.

"All of their real and personal properties will be picked up for taxation, including barrels," Mitchell said. "Sazerac is investing heavily in Rutherford County, and I feel certain as astute businesspeople they want to fully support the schools and emergency responders in our community and be good corporate citizens of our community."
