Big Bend National Park turned into 'military zone' near Texas border, report says

Residents are feeling like the Big Bend region is turning into a "military zone" after President Donald Trump sent hundreds of troops and armored vehicles to the area, despite the area recording the lowest number of migrant crossings.
The troops are part of the Trump administration's mission to crack down on illegal immigration. In late March, Marfa Public Radio first reported that 200 troops arrived in the Big Bend area, with the number growing to 500 in April.
In the area, resident Anibal Galindo told NPR that she feels they're turning the place into a "military zone" or "wanna-be conflict zone." NPR reported that she believes the region already has a strong law enforcement presence, negating the need for the full force.
Marfa Public Radio reported the troops will not be directly involved in arresting people suspected of being in the U.S. without legal status. Officials said they will be operating in a "support" role for federal border agents. However, Big Bend has the fewest number of encounters of the entire Southwest region, according to data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The encounters are Title 8 Enforcement Actions, which refers to "apprehensions or inadmissibles processed under CBP's immigration authority."
