Popcorn Time As Republican Civil War Breaks Out In Texas

By Alex Samuels — April 22, 2025

Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas is staring down the biggest political threat of his career: a MAGA-fueled primary challenge from state Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Paxton kicked off his Senate bid on April 8, announcing it on Fox News with host Laura Ingraham and blasting Cornyn’s “lack of production” in more than two decades on the job.

Snip

The thing is, Cornyn has been reliably conservative and loyal to Trump. But that won’t stop this from likely turning into one of the ugliest, most expensive GOP primaries in recent Texas history—a full-on proxy war between the Republican establishment and the MAGA wing. Trump hasn’t endorsed yet, but he’s teasing that he’ll tip the scales before the March 2026 primary.

Snip

Cornyn may have the donors, the party brass, and the resume—but in today’s GOP, that may not be enough. If Trump backs Paxton, Cornyn’s long Senate career could be toast. And if Paxton wins? Democrats may finally have a (narrow) shot at flipping a Senate seat in Texas.

I think it could get a Democratic Senator in this state it would be such a uplifting win for us. It is so embarrassing these days to live in a state that seems so backwards. There really a lot of people that don't have their head up their ass.

Counting votes is the County Clerks’ job. Certifying the votes is the Secretary of State.

The little weasels’s job is to investigate and prosecute allegations of election misconduct and fraud.

A ruling limited AG Paxton’s power to go after voter fraud. So why is he still spending millions?

Since a 2021 court ruling limited Attorney General Ken Paxton’s ability to prosecute voter fraud, his office’s work combating those crimes has slowed to a crawl.

Yet even as Paxton’s election fraud unit has seen its caseload dwindle and most of its lawyers disperse, it has continued to spend millions, records obtained by Hearst Newspapers show. Last fiscal year, the unit prosecuted just four cases and spent most of its $2.3 million budget. This fiscal year, which ends Aug. 31, it has closed just two cases and is on track to spend $1 million.

John Cornyn’s gonna pound him into the ground over this. Cornyn served on the Texas Supreme Court from 1991 to 1997 and as the attorney general of Texas from 1999 to 2002.
