Big Spring firefighters push for Proposition A ahead of election
BIG SPRING, Texas (KOSA) - In Big Spring, local firefighters are encouraging voters to learn more about Proposition A, a measure that would give them the right to collective bargaining. Currently, Big Spring firefighters operate under what they call a handshake agreement, a meet-and-confer system that allows them to discuss issues only with the citys mayor and city manager.
Firefighters say Proposition A would allow for clearer communication and fairer negotiations with the city.
This is not a power-grab by us by any means. This is a way for us to sit down and negotiate together in good faith, said Matthew Burrow, Association President of Fire Station 2922 in Big Spring.
The department runs four fire stations across the city all of them reportedly understaffed, with about 18 firefighters per shift. Burrow says collective bargaining would allow both sides to formally discuss important topics like pay, working conditions, and benefits, all within a structured four-year contract.
