Blacksburg councilman (D) election fraud jury trial begins

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Eighteen months after a Blacksburg town councilman was charged with felony election fraud and illegally voting in an election, the 26 year-old appeared in court for a jury trial.

Liam Watson was arrested by Virignia State Police in July 2024 after a months-long investigation revealed he allegedly committed three counts of felony election fraud and one count felony illegally voting in an election during the November 2023 general election.

He was released on bail and has since been continuing duties on Blacksburg Town Council. One of the election fraud charges was dismissed in May.

During the trial, Montgomery County Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Patrick Jensen argued Watson’s “deceit” in his campaign as a write-in candidate for a spot on Blacksburg’s town council stemmed from his address.
