US Cellular to lay off WA employees ahead of sale to T-Mobile

United States Cellular Corp. (NYSE: USM) is laying off 86 workers in Washington in the run-up to its sale of its wireless operations to T-Mobile US Inc. (Nasdaq: TMUS) this year.

The layoffs will affect 4,100 U.S. Cellular associates companywide, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed Monday. The $4.4 billion acquisition is expected to close in the next few months.

U.S. Cellular spokeswoman Hannah Smith said T-Mobile would offer employment to "at least a majority" of the company's associates as part of the acquisition agreement.

"For associates who are not offered opportunities at T-Mobile, we are committed to working with them to ensure a smooth transition, including caring for them with severance packages and support in preparing for new employment," Smith said in a statement.
