Senator Bill Ramos: 1956-2025

This morning, all of us at the Northwest Progressive Institute were shocked to learn that our dear friend Senator Bill Ramos of the 5th Legislative District died suddenly yesterday while running on a trail near his home after a long day of work at the Capitol. His passing, announced by his wife King County Councilmember Sarah Perry, is a devastating tragedy that leaves us without one of the kindest, most dedicated elected leaders that Martin Luther King Junior County’s Eastside region has ever known.

There are no words that can properly express the sadness and pain I’m feeling today — and I know from reading tributes to Bill that my grief is widely shared.

Bill represented the best of us… the very best. He was a wonderful father, spouse, friend, mentor, and colleague. He had a first-rate work ethic, provided excellent constituent service, and was enthusiastic about finding solutions to help not only people in his district, but people across our beloved state and the wider Pacific Northwest.

Bill’s public life began at the local level. Before he joined the Washington State Legislature, he was a city councilmember. He ran for the Issaquah City Council and was elected in 2015. It was while he was on the Council that I first met him and Sarah Perry, and we became fast friends. I began showing up at their events and they started showing up at NPI’s events. That gave us a lot of opportunities to get to know each other better, to jointly strategize for worthy causes, and to support each other’s work.
