Edmonds red-light camera program underway

EVERETT — The city of Edmonds issued 215 warning letters to drivers from April 10 to 17, just weeks after launching its new red-light camera program.

The two cameras — one at the intersection of 220th Street Southwest and Highway 99 and the other at the intersection of 100th Avenue West and Edmonds Way — picked up 535 violations. Of those, 320 were either rejected or are yet to be processed or reviewed, said Edmonds Police Cmdr. Josh McClure.

The city is currently in its 30-day warning period, so any violators will receive a warning letter and no citation. After the warning period, drivers will receive a $145 citation if their vehicle is captured not stopping or not coming to a complete stop before turning right at a red light.

“Nobody’s getting any violations at this point,” McClure said. “This is a really good opportunity for us to educate the public and say, ‘Hey, look, these things are active, we want you to know that they’re recognizing red-light-running behavior, and we want you to change your behavior because this is about traffic safety.’”

To protect themselves from prosecution when the red light camera gives a faulty reading; for instance, when pulling a trailer and yellow turns red while the vehicle is still in the intersection, making its turn, having to wait for oncoming traffic to pass first.
Drivers will also have to worry about the driver in front of them suddenly stopping as soon as the light turns yellow and, conversely, a driver behind, who may assume that that the driver in front will not suddenly stop the second that the light turns yellow.
An alternative could be to have the lights green long enough so that drivers aren’t pressured to race through the intersection, extend both the yellow light time and the time of the crossing red light so that it doesn’t turn green as soon as the opposing yellow turns red. This discourages drivers from not slowing down when the light is red in anticipation of getting a green light and create the likelihood that any crossing driver will stop first.
On my corner, this set up has cut down accidents significantly.
A large percentage of cars now are now equipped with their own cameras so accident fault can now be determined without having to install traffic light cameras, if the primary purpose is to reduce the rate of accidents and not create a fund raiser for the police department.
