Now the underdog, Harrell touts progress made in downtown Seattle

Just over a month removed from a primary election wake-up call, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell delivered an overview of his signature Downtown Activation Plan (DAP) on Tuesday.

The media briefing in the future Boon Boona coffee shop at Overlook Walk was far more subdued than the 2023 announcement at Westlake Park, when he vigorously contended with chanting protesters angry about how the city was conducting encampment removals.

The tone of Tuesday's briefing seemed to mirror the state of his reelection bid.

With the general election two months away, Harrell's campaign is searching for answers following a stunning 9.5% primary election defeat to activist Katie Wilson, co-founder of the Transit Riders' Union. The last Seattle mayor to win reelection was Greg Nickels in 2005.
