State Democrats propose bill to deter election bribery in Wisconsin

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - State Democrats are asking for change in state elections. The Petition Payment Prohibition Act would make being paid to sign a petition around election time illegal.

Democrats are hoping to get support across the aisle by Republicans for this bill, a bill they say will make it clear elections cannot be bought.

The new legislation will expand the already in place election bribery law to include payments offered in exchange for signing petitions that support candidates. It’s an action Democrats say occurred leading up to the state Supreme Court election between Susan Crawford and Brad Schimel, April 1.

This comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk traveled to Green Bay last month, offering one million dollars to three voters each for signing a petition to get more people out to vote.
