Republican ballot drop box resentment spurs bills, debate

As President Donald Trump targets mail-in voting and revives unfounded election doubts, some Republican state lawmakers are trying to make changes to ballot drop boxes in Wisconsin.

But they can’t agree on exactly what should be done.

Ballot drop boxes have become a divisive issue since the 2020 election when they were widely used by voters at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and when Trump and other election deniers falsely claimed they lacked security and led to election fraud.

Use of the curbside boxes also sparked legal battles. In 2022, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that state law prohibits nearly all ballot drop boxes. In 2024, the court — now with a liberal majority — reversed that ruling, saying local election clerks could decide whether to use drop boxes.
