This happened in the mid 80s, but I wrote about it last year:
Keep in mind, I pay zero attention to sports. A little drifts in if it's covered in the local news before the weather forecast, but that's it. I was in the Chicago area for graduate school. I'd driven to Midway Airport to pick up my roommate. It did seem like the traffic on the way to the airport was heavier than usual. All I know is, I was headed down the hallway to where her gate was, and there were a bunch of big guys blocking my way. They were going a little slower than I wanted to go, but I couldn't get around them.
I noticed the crowds on either side of the hallway were getting larger. So then I took a longer look at these men in my way. Some of them definitely had a private security vibe going on. And then I finally recognized Jim McMahon, but really only because he'd been in Rolling Stone magazine. So I dropped back a bit, but kept going--I didn't want to be late to meet my roommate!
The guys in front of me made it to their gate. The crowd was really big by this time. Security was keeping people back and because this was between me and the gate where my roommate was coming in, I couldn't go any further. So I made a U-turn and walked back the way I'd come, with probably a lot of people wondering what that girl's connection to the team was.
Found out later that they were all flying to Europe for an exhibition game. It was after the Chicago Bears won the Super Bowl and a bunch of fans showed up to see them off. (Why would you do that???) The crowd cleared after the team boarded the plane and I finally found my roommate. Whew!
