We are alarmed that this project is being considered, said Nadya Rivera, of Puerto Rico Clinicians for Climate Action, who warned of the consequences of burning coal on peoples health.
Puerto Rico has one of the worlds highest asthma rates, and medical doctors have testified in public hearings that theyve seen a significant increase in various types of cancers and other diseases in the islands southern region since the plant began operating.
