The Hydrogen Stream: BASF starts Germany's largest PEM electrolyzer

The Hydrogen Stream: BASF starts Germany’s largest PEM electrolyzer

PV-Magazine.com | MARCH 18, 2025 SERGIO MATALUCCI

BASF has commissioned a 54 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer at its Ludwigshafen site after two years of construction. The electrolyzer, which includes 72 installed stacks, could reduce greenhouse gas emissions at BASF’s main plant by up to 72,000 metric tons per year. The German company said it invested €25 million ($27.3 million) in the project, with the European Union contributing €124.3 million. Hydrogen from the system will be used in the production of ammonia, methanol, and vitamins.

Sungrow Hydrogen has secured the largest share of alkaline hydrogen production equipment orders from China Coal Ordos Energy Chemical for its 100,000-ton “Liquid Sunshine” demonstration project. Sungrow said it will supply 16 sets of 1,200 Nm³/h alkaline electrolyzers with gas-liquid separation and purification systems. The green hydrogen will combine with refined carbon dioxide from chemical installations to produce methanol. The CNY 4.9 billion ($690 million) project in Inner Mongolia will feature 625,000 kW of new energy capacity and a hydrogen production capacity of 21,000 metric tons per year.

Here is an example of the world moving forward. The USA should be leading in this technology as it is the future.. But why move forward when we can move backward. By the Way when the USA was great in the Maga eyes the USA was leading the world in tech and innovation and the tax rates of the rich was much higher and by the way the government was mostly controlled by those evil Democrats..Too bad make America great now means to dismantle the research that our Government has historically funded and make discrimination great again.

The Norwegian Energy Minister States It Bluntly: "It's an absolute shit situation."

The people who funded Putin and his wars by buying gas and oil from him?

The people who routinely demonstrate disgusting .levels of carbon intensity for electricity, a coal dependent hellhole?

Electricity Map, German Coal Dependent Hellhole.

Well, it's not at all surprising that people trying to rebrand fossil fuels as "hydrogen," are happy to produce slick videos supporting this unconscionable attack on the future of the planet.

It fits right in.

Of course, it's just a nonsense show, not worth the energy to build the plant, nor the energy wasted on generating the slick fossil fuel rebranding ad to describe it.

Anyone who understands how trivial at 54 MW plant of any kind on this planet understands how absurd this bullshit is. On this planet, in 2023, humanity consumed 642 Exajoules of energy. This translates to an average continuous power consumption of around 20 trillion Watts. 54 MW is thus, for people who can do math and thus don't buy into hydrogen bullshit, 2.6 billionths of World Energy demand.

The contempt for the environment rings through with every one of these slick fossil fuel rebranding ads trying to sell fossil fuels as "hydrogen." Every. Damned. One.

No sense of decency, none!
