Potato planting day...

Maybe not a real holiday but we celebrated here. Had to screen the compost that’s been marinating all fall and winter. Planting three kinds this year Russet, Yukon Gold, Red.
Planting in grow bags this year, trying to save wear and tear on the old knees. Using 20 gallon bags we had on hand, preferably I would’ve gone slightly bigger… should be ok. Nice thing is we kept them in the greenhouse for now til the weather is more settled giving us about a three week head start.

Screening out the compost…yes that is naturally occurring perlite in the mixture…😂🤣

Getting the bags ready.

Trying to optimize the spaces this year…added in a couple more straw bales. Last couple years the experimenting with them went well, so getting serious this year. A famous straw bale teacher is now the moderator for this forum… tons of informative videos.
It’s amazing on how much you can get from small spaces. Here’s to wishing I was 30 years younger…I’ve got a concept for tower gardens. Think of a kids play structure…levels with intermittent small steps to various levels and spaces like decks. Footprint could be as small as 10-10. Watering could be on a drip to next level setup…one level dripping water to the level below. Care would have to be taken for the proper placement of the plants but it’s doable.
Vertical gardening is an established method, this would be more for the home gardeners with limited space…up is an alternative.

I love my compost pile. I have a 3 row system that has worked well for years… new stuff goes in the back of pile in its own trench. That one gets pulled forward the next year and marinates in the middle…next year that gets pulled forward and screened to use. Debris gets recycled to the back along with the new stuff.
Compost comprised of all grass clippings from mowing, garden trimmings, veggie scraps from kitchen. Absolutely no animal droppings or meat. We make our own garden soil for our grow bags that gets recycled also. It’s where the perlite comes from. It does help in the compost pile too.

Seaweed is a great fertilizer. ‘Apples from the earth’ (pomme de terre) grown in produce from the sea…wonderful.

This year too. Doing Caribou Russet and Lehighs. Figured it would be nice just to dump the bag instead of digging for the potatoes. HERES TO A GOOD HARVEST!
