COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Declawing cats could become illegal in Ohio if a recently introduced bipartisan bill is signed into law.

Senate Bill 252, introduced on Sept. 3, would ban declawing in the state, along with any other procedure that would alter the normal function of a cat’s toes. Declawing refers to an operation that removes a cat’s claws through the surgical amputation of the last bone of each toe, typically for the purpose of preventing the animal from scratching people or furniture.

snip-"The bill would allow a veterinarian to declaw a cat only if they determine it to be medically necessary, such as in cases of a recurring infection or injury. Vets who declaw a cat under these circumstances would be required to file a written statement with the state’s veterinary medical licensing board within 10 days of the surgery, including information on the purpose of the procedure and lab reports demonstrating why it was medically necessary.

The vet’s statement must also include the name, address and phone number of the cat’s owner, as well as identifying information about the cat. Vets would also be required to give owners a copy of this form."

Then I took care of my daughter's cat after the surgery and realized it would be for us as though someone clipped off our fingertips. Poor little guy was afraid to walk on the carpet and was freaked out after the procedure. I did some ad lib occupational therapy for him when I found a cockroach in the bathtub (I was living in north Florida). I put him in the tub with it. Once he was focused on catching it, he forgot about his paws.
I now believe it's inhumane and cruel to do that to a cat. I support this legislation. His name was Monet because my daughter acquired him at a farmer's market as an art history student. After the procedure, we changed his name to DeClawed Monet.

I know that amputees have phantom pain, I can't even imagine what a cat feels. Years ago, a neighbor did it to their manx cat, who traditionally already have medical issues. After have her toes were removed she stopped using the litter box and they made her stay out side most of the day. They didn't see the connection, always bragged about having manx cat, though.

One of the questions was would I have the cat de-clawed. I never had a cat de-clawed before, so I went on the internet to do some research and the more I read about it, the more horrified I became. I swore I would never do that to any cat and I never have.

My cats have plenty to claw on. They really don't claw on furniture very often. I have their claws trimmed at their yearly check-ups. The biggest problem I have with claws is that my cat Holly doesn't retract hers when she puts her paw on my arm when she wants me to pet her.
