https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/celebrity/dl-hughley-says-former-donald-trump-supporters-dont-deserve-forgiveness/ar-AA1KpWDQ?ocid=BingNewsSerpHe's absolutely right.
The comedian joined us Tuesday on "TMZ Live," saying the only reason some folks turn anti-Trump is because he caused something bad to happen to them or someone close -- not because bad things have been happening to others all along during his 2 times in office ... which, in his book, makes these former Trumpers selfish.
D.L. pops off in our video, brushing off Charles question about forgiveness in politics and saying the whole Republican game now is built on loyalty -- and they ride or die with it
Reasons in TMZ Video:
1. Their inherent selfishness.
2. You didn't care who your vote hurt as long as it was Black and brown people are hurt and all the more better for it if it hurt black and brown people.
3. You helped Trump attack Black Cities with Black Mayors.
4. You helped Trump round up Brown people.
5. Three bites of the apple, they voted for him the first time, saw him raise an insurrection, then voted for him again.
It was deliberate.
Why should I trust you?

Put your ass on the line for others and then maybe someday you can be forgiven.

(19,460 posts)The farmers can go F*** off. They voted for this. I oppose all farm subsidies.
JustAnotherGen
(36,500 posts)Because it's a reimplementation of the old farm bureau policy of giving freebies to white farmers and nothing to black farmers.
Also - I'm final sig on a family agribiz - original farm in AL, then land picked up in the Great Depression by my granddaddy in MS, and GA. My dad as final sig bought a lot of land in Arkansas.
We have never received any of those handouts. We've always gone it alone -
So can they.
I'm inclined to believe two things:
1. When you farm to feed your community - you can never go wrong.
2. When you don't know how to run your business, you shouldn't be allowed to take from those farmers who DO know how to run their business.

(14,751 posts)What Trump voters "deserve" is secondary to whether they can reject Trumpism and help us save our country from fascism.
To the extent our attitudes and interactions with them will influence their contribution in this effort (primarily their votes) we should keep in mind the imperative goal of winning elections.
Actual forgiveness resides in the heart of each person in a position to forgive -- especially among those most injured.
True redemption must be sought, through actions, by those who acknowledge the wrong they have done.
To me, forgiveness is like trust; it must be earned. If I believe someome has honestly found redemption, I might forgive an individual person. It may depend on the severity of the injury.
The injuries caused by the election of Donald Trump are widespread and severe, affecting more than myself and circle of family & friends.
Forgiveness truly is a matter of the heart in each of us. Sometimes, the family member of a slain victim can only begin to heal through forgiveness.
Of this I am certain:
Our country needs healing, but first we must defeat the fascists who are destroying it.
Also:
The fascist strategy has been to turn Americans against each other, to divide and conquer. Decades of propaganda have heavily influenced many otherwise decent folks who lack the necessary critical thinking skills to break out of the bubble in which they were raised or into which they were misled.
This is in no way excuses adult citizens who should know better, or hateful racists beyond redemption. I don't foresee a day when all Americans will be united, but I do believe it is possible to overcome the current threat and to start building a better future.
It is up to each of us, individually and collectively.

(36,500 posts)The only thing that wins the hearts and minds of the magarepub from Black Americans -
Is when they see us impoverished, beaten, lynched, thrown in jail for no reason.
I can't win them over. They don't like us. They hate us.
I was born in 1973. Black woman - mixed married - parents were death til you part married.
I've dealt with these 'things' all of my life - and I'm telling you . . .
They are stone cold racists. This why the Far Leftists are always telling us we need a working class voter strategy. We do have one.
But the magapub thinks only white people should benefit from everyone's taxes.
And that's the truth of it.
I HATE them and always will.
They did it to themselves.
Martin Eden
(14,751 posts)However, I do not believe every single person who voted for Trump was motivated by racism. Research data shows 13% of Trump voters in 2016 had previously voted for Obama. Some voted for Trump in 2020 & 2024 as well.
In my experience, anecdotally from people I know and nation-wide statistics, no entire group of voters for any particular candidate is a monolithic block, all motivated by the same factors.
Though in my opinion, everyone who voted for Trump is a gullible fool, ignorant, racist, or some combination thereof. That's still a broad brush, and I'm still angry at every one of them.
JustAnotherGen
(36,500 posts)They are cult/movement.
I live in the 6th wealthiest county in America. Those people with Trump Flags on their porches were not worried about prices.
They hate the same people he does.
This is cultural. Their ideal culture is one of total domination of white Christians over anyone else.
There is not a single policy that drives their undying adoration and commitment.
It's a cultural phenomenon similar to what Italy saw in 1925.
Martin Eden
(14,751 posts)In my experience, that does not apply to every Trump voter. The cultural/tribal aspect is indeed a very large commonality among perhaps a high percent Trump voters, but still too broad of a brush. If you believe 100% of Trump voters are irredeemable haters, I believe you are mistaken.
Many are low information voters mostly ignorant of government and history; some are youngsters not especially into politics but influenced by TikTok and podcasts and peers in their social group. I know a lot of white guys my age because I play softball in senior leagues and tournaments around the country. The majority are decent fellows, many of whom are simply lifelong Republicans interested in low taxes and limited government. Some are friends with Black teammates, traveling & rooming together. Politics and current events are not big factors in their lives.
There is no excuse for any responsible adult to vote for today's Party of Trump, but cultural bigotry hatred does not drive every single one of them.

(36,500 posts)I have two nieces and two nephews in America.
From them I have 2 great nephews and 6 great nieces in America.
They are all a mix of Black, Latino/Latina and European descent.
They all appear as Black.or Latino.
Your baseball buddies might have voted for lower taxes -
But their vote is an Existential Threat to the children in my family - age 1 to 32. Existential. And the reality is - your friends don't care.
My husband has dropped every single friend who voter for Trump. He's a 56 year old white man from Italy - who became an American in 2020. He lived 8 years in the Bronx as a kid then the family went back to Italy. He's a blacksmith, owned and sold for a tidy profit several trade businesses, turned his Iron works into an employee co-op, and now only takes specific clients for our on property studio and is moving back to sculpting.
My husband based on appearance - has heard every snotty racist thing the magapubs have thought to spew. He's my inside guy. The white male who can get in and around their spaces? Vociferously disagrees with you.
Your idea may be well intentioned - but my littles don't have the luxury your baseball friends have of not paying attention to "Politics and current events". Your friends are the Default Setting. The game right now? It's rigged in their favor.
It has been since 1877. It's rigged For Now against my descendants.
Maybe they need to understand what it's like to not be the Default Setting. You - since you still rub shoulders with them - can tip them off. One last head start in AmeriKKKa.
Martin Eden
(14,751 posts)I avoid politics in my sport, to focus on winning the game. Politics can be poison to team chemistry, but I do overhear private off the field conversions.
I don't dispute anyone's experience with the variety of racists or ignorant bigots in this country. There was no shortage of them in my Chicago neighborhood on the SW side of Chicago. One April morning when I was ten years old I came downstairs and found my Aunt Kate weeping. She had just learned MLK was murdered. She helped raise me while both my parents worked. All the adults in my family were for Civil Rights, but not so much with my peers at school. They were in a celebratory mood, their parents thrilled that We finally got him!
I don't dispute anyone's encounter with racist Trumpers, but have you engaged with every single person who voted for Trump -- or even a statistically significant sample from multiple demographics from around the country? I certainly haven't, but I do know some people who voted for Trump that are neither racist nor full of hate. This includes the sons of a first cousin who, as a young man, found religion and libertarianism. One of his sons married a Mexican American, and another a Venezuelan immigrant. They don't hate the same people Trump hates. I've known my cousin all my life, and his sons since they were born. They are not haters, however much I disagree with them.

That's all I'm reading here.

Threads is open to everyone. Type in @smugcristophe and see the movement he has started.
We've done that since 1877. Your folks have been front and center since 2015. We know everything there is to know about our Opposition.
They know nothing about us.
My perception of your words? Let's all come together and understand them. That is the old thinking of White Supremacy.
I mean - what's a little ignoring evil in the name of the USA? I mean - we've done it for 160 years.
You are talking statistics. The opposition doesn't do that.
They do emotion, feelings, fear.
Why should I have to do that. Why do I have to do Free Labor and they don't?
True story - One can be married to a Latina and not like Black people or Asians.
Another true story: I didn't know white people 50 and older could be racist until my dad retired from the military in1978 and we moved to the Rochester NY area.
Guess where my formative years were spent?
Martin Eden
(14,751 posts)And your perception of my words is very much mistaken.
There is only ONE POINT I've been trying to make in these exchanges:
Not every single one of the more than 77 million who voted for Trump in 2024 is a racist full of hate against non-whites.
Statistically, demographically, that is a virtual impossibility. 24% of Black men and 7% of Black women voted for Trump in 2024. Also 50% of Hispanic men and 36% of Hispanic women.
When it comes to white Trump voters, I will agree that a high percent is cultural & tribal, which contains a large element of racial hatred. But it's not 100%, as I know from personal experience.
But they all have one thing in common -- they share the blame for the catastrophe of this Trump administration. For the injury done to every person as a consequence. For the reversal of progress in racial, gender, social, civil, and economic justice.
Now, what should be our highest priority?
We have to win elections, and resume bending the long arc of the moral universe towards justice.
Not back to any status quo that existed before the 2024 election, or the one before that, or the one before that. Towards REAL progress; towards fulfilling the highest ideals of an America which have never been sufficiently fulfilled.
In no way, shape, or form have I intentionally suggested any of the things you apparently ascribe to me in your post to which I am replying.
But winning elections and making real progress is an extremely difficult task with the American people so bitterly divided. We have to win back the People of Color and so many others who were conned into voting for Trump.
It's a waste of time trying to coddle or persuade Maga cultists full of hate -- or any person incapable of admitting they were wrong, or of seeking true redemption.
I ask you to go back and read my first post in this thread. The concept of forgiveness and redemption was my reason for posting here in the first place.
Peace,
Martin

(36,500 posts)Which is my point - and the point of most GenX Black Americans. We are drawing in the millenials and genz.
BTW - I spent my formative years in West Germany. My father was a Green Beret and deeply respected by former German Officers who served time for the actions in WW2. My parents were invited to two of their private drinking clubs - along with other Green Beret officers. They were the people who gave us our German Shepherd Duke during the year of terror (1977).
I was very shocked to learn Herr so and so and Frau so and so were part of Nazi Regime. They were very kind to the tan kids with curly blonde hair.
They were DEFEATED. That never happened to the CSA - whose DNA is in the blood of the current magapubs.
Forgiveness and Redemption will come after every single one of them admits they voted for a Racist Fascist and they denounce him.
Every. Single. One.
I will never forgive anyone who inadvertently put the lives of my nieces and nephews at risk.
This is in the African American Group. And it is here for a reason. What did Kendrick Lamar sing?
"They ain't like us."
They had a chance to do the right thing with the Joyful and Kind Black/Asian Woman - VP Harris.
Because they didn't - they now have to deal with the Mean Black Aunties.
It's a self-inflicted wound.

(14,751 posts)"Forgiveness and Redemption will come after every single one of them admits they voted for a Racist Fascist and they denounce him."
So if 99% admit they voted for a Racist Fascist and denounce him, Forgiveness and Redemption are impossible for any one of them because 1% refuse.
In other words, Forgiveness and Redemption will never happen for any Trump voter.
And that's OK, insofar as elections do not hinge on it.
As I tried to articulate in my first post, it is not up to me to tell anyone to forgive someone who caused them injury. I've never walked a few steps in your shoes, let alone a mile. People born with far less privilege than myself have suffered injuries I can never fully understand, even after I've heard the personal account.
Redempion resides within the one who caused injury, but the injured have the right to accept or deny it.
Peace.
