when lost at sea
the fear the waves bring crashing across the bow
deep inside every stoic face eyes carefully guarded
listening to the seas sing and uttering a cursed vow
a benefit to a heroic race with all prayers discarded
the creak of the mast mingled in the plank’s groans
a lifted and exposed rudder bereft of any direction
aloft the torn sails signal the course set in the bones
though they merely flutter ragged with no protection
the bilge overflows and fouls all beneath the decks
lashings stressed strained threatening the cargo hold
as deep in the dark bowels comes the start of wrecks
a drip a drop a leak contained no more a hull holed
suspended between the devil and a deep blue depth
foundered way off of the level one final watery breath
