huddled amidst the deadfall by the side of the road
safety unassured no future no hope to be promised
even too afraid to crawl where has courage flowed
apart from dream’s nurture cursed and admonished
clinging to a few torn scraps the limits of possession
empty canteen hard crumbs at the bottom of a bag
living unable to fill the gaps to expect the recession
grown farther away the drums lose rhythm and drag
with no way out no escape caught in a violent circle
surrounded in fear and death as ghosts drift upwards
witness to murder and rape bruised black and purple
gasping at the one last breath as no sanctuary guards
beneath the heart and soul when all doubt is exposed
tinder brings flame to the coal as a reality is imposed
