singing songs of war

singing songs of war

so now we huddle around campfires singing songs of war
broken battered beaten and weary staring across the years
once we fought against empires blood slaughter and gore
hearts weaken eyes grown bleary memories filled in fears
the days shorten all glory stolen and living a life in shame
empty stomachs and empty souls clinging to our weapons
words in history books beholden seeking to anoint blame
a step away from begging bowls to abandon all possessions
where eagle soared vultures circling the scene of the feast
our swords dulled bowstrings frayed wet powder rusted rifles
all lost while destroying cultures grains of sympathy ceased
invisible gods to whom we prayed are reduced to trite trifles
the songs seem to echo hollow as old voices gag and croak
on the truths hard to swallow cracking one last heroic joke
