my ghost

my ghost still living inside rattling in the night
while wheezing all day counting the short steps
taking a break between jobs to find the faults
the patches in the hair the lines along the face
my ghost hesitates and lurches from side to side
it cannot wait to escape the limits of this body
sensing freedom it moans groans and reaches
barely able to sustain life always willing to die
my ghost is getting stronger how do i fight back
a rip here and rent there all letting out the dark
clumsily sewn with numb fingers and dull needle
seams separating as soon as they’re patched up
my ghost is now at rest but i fear it will awaken
and take up a war against me that i cannot win
