Wings CEO to city of Dallas: 'We want clarity' on Memorial Auditorium renovation timeline
ARLINGTON, Texas As other professional sports teams leave the city's core, the CEO of the Dallas Wings WNBA team said the team is still committed to moving to Downtown Dallas -- but needs clarity from city leaders on whether the Dallas Memorial Auditorium will be ready for tip-off in the 2028 season as promised.
"I just want everyone to remember that the Dallas Wings made a contractual commitment to be Downtown over two years ago, and we remain excited about being Downtown. We just want to get some clarity of when that will actually happen," Greg Bibb told WFAA in an interview Thursday.
The path toward bringing the Wings to Dallas has not been smooth. After a triumphant press conference announcing the deal in 2024, delays started to mount. First, the team agreed to push the start of play at the Memorial Auditorium by a year to 2027 to accommodate the FIFA World Cup Broadcast Center next door, Bibb said.
Then the team and the city agreed to move a practice facility planned for the arena site to a park in Far West Oak Cliff, which the city paid the team to take over development on, following more delays earlier this year. Now the arena itself isn't set to be ready until 2028 -- though design plans have not been finalized and construction has not yet begun.
