Jackie Robinson, first black baseball player

MY HERO story by Jermaine from Fresno from 2014

People put Jackie Robinson down, they said he wouldn't ever be nothing in life and he was a joke. He broke the color line of black people playing baseball. He is my hero, i really look to him. I want to play in the national league just like he did. He can take a lot from people just to be one man. People spit on him, called him racist names, but he took all of that because he was a black man trying to make a white man's sports free to everyone. He stopped segregation in the baseball league. Most people thought he was a bad person, thought he was ugly, said he was no good in baseball, people even said he stole, but as you can see the only thing he really stole was home base. That's why he my hero.

1947 the rookie Jackie Robinson won the all time rookie of the year award. A lot of people were shocked. They never thought he would do it or should i say they didn't want him to. When he won the rookie of the year award, a little bit more people respected him a little more but they still didn't want him there. They wanted him out because he was black and they said the sport & the award was for the white man. So there were rumors around the world the black people can now play baseball then a lot of people started to play baseball.

I don't want to be pedantic or downplay Robinson, who is also one of my personal heroes - I mean, Good God, I can't imagine how he took what he took - but the Negro league did everything the majors did. When Cooperstown finally recognized their existence, it was way past time. And they'd better not try to take it back.

Still, Robinson is special. Not only did he last the two years that he promised he wouldn't respond to the abuse, but afterwards, he handled himself with grace and dignity, while responding to all of it. He was a race man in the best of all the senses.

There was one part of the sermon where Congressman Jonathan Jackson of the 1st district of Illinois gave his talk and he talked about Jackie Robinson and I made the post from that.

I got the part of the transcript where he talks about Jackie Robinson. It is at the 58 min mark where the congressman talks.

Thank you Madame President, Congressman, Reverend Dr Janette, Pastor Boyd to your beloved founder Mother Jackie on behalf of the board of directors and staff of Community Renewal Society It is good to be here.

It's a wickedness in high places who takes on the military and saying that you can no longer honor the heroism of Jackie Robinson, that language of Mr Jackie Robinson having broke the color barrier. I think that lane is too sanitized. Frankly we need to talk about Mr Jackie Robinson having broke the inferiority superiority mentality that was in baseball. What is the problem half of the equation is we honor Jackie Robinson. But brothers and sisters, I tell you today, you need to tell the whole story. We need not just mention Jackie Robinson because he did a great thing and he stood for civil rights, he broke down the walls of segregation, he was an athlete, he was a military person. He did tremendous service. But we also have to acknowledge that of Branch Ricky, the owner of the team. Yes somebody would say "Well hold on, that's too far. Why are you talking about both?" Branch Ricky was the team owner. Jackie Robinson could have never made the team unless there was some courageous good man, good person that had the right spirit of Christ and the American values. He said "I'm going to take on the heat. I'm going to take on the headwind." Jackie Robinson was not picked simply because he was the best athlete. He was picked because he was a great athlete and mature enough to take the hits. In his first season, Jackie Robinson got hit with the most wild pitches. There were actually strikes to hit him and hurt him. He got more hit balls on him than there were wild pitches in the entire league combined. They tried to break his spirit. Branch Ricky said "I'm going to need you be that excellent off the field as you are on the field because you've got to carry it for the race." We have to talk about race. If there's something I can think about, I want to thank Mr President Donald J Trump for he makes it a whole lot easier to teach African American history.
