Going through JFK NYC

Some friends and I are planning a South Africa trip for Sept 2026. Flying out from San Diego. One friend is adament she does NOT want to go through JFK. I know its big and maybe confusing, but the three of us could probably figure it out.
Anyone have alot of throuble with JFK?
I was scared of O'Hare a couple years ago, but there were lots of connecting flight signs and people on the ground to direct me.
Your thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks so much!

My husband was just flown through O'hare to Milan a few weeks ago - he'd never flown through there. He still prefers JFK to Atlanta - and O'hare.

No experience as a stop over... I fly through JFK as a departure point almost exclusively. Once you're inside it should be no different or worse than any other unfamiliar airport. You should be totally fine.
