I watched a video about The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Co. Stephen King's "The Shining" was based on this...

King had stayed in The Stanley Hotel and supposedly based his story on this place. I visited there once years ago but didn't spend the night...Beautiful place with the Old Stanley Steamer car in the lobby...I saw nothing spooky...Neat place...I think the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, AR has more scary vibes...

-the hardiest among us made it up there, and those flying in from elsewhere missed out as Estes was essentially closed off for a couple of days. The Stanley was at the end of its usual season and was due to close after our conference for renovations, so staffing was pretty minimal. We essentially had the place to ourselves, and I admittedly joined two others doing a fully UNOFFICIAL tour of the Stanley--including corridors and rooms not open to the public. So, I got to experience Stanley like King did-- only with his movie in the back of my mind. It was quite the experience. Really!

The place is beautiful, but if your imagination was running wild, well...

My last job in Colorado was as night auditor / security at an historic hotel in Estes Park that overlooked The Stanley. I had a young couple leave in the middle of the night, saying that there had been a ghost in their room looking for French fries. Didn't ask about a refund, just wanted out fast. When they asked about other accommodations, I helpfully suggested that "well, there is The Stanley..." They bolted.

I have many fond memories.

I'd love to see a ghost...In college I was helping with a play "The Hounds of the Baskervilles", the director got the idea and permission to have a rehearsal in a so called haunted house to help with spooky vibes...I wandered around the upstairs and basement daring any spooks to come out...nuttin happened. Oh well...
