A U.S. Archbishop Shreds Trump's Budget Bill: "The Cruelty of This Bill Is Historic"
Archbishop John Wester of Santa Fe had some thoughts to share about the legislative news of the day.
Moreover, the church and the bishops of the United States should lead the way in speaking against this bill and calling on Catholics to work for its defeat. Because of its overall effects on those who are most in need, passing this budget would be a moral failure for American society as a whole. Unless the church opposes it in the clearest possible terms, we will squander the credibility of our witness to the Gospel and Christs command to care for the least of these.
Wester goes on to enumerate the many ways the Big Plug Ugly lights the 25th chapter of Matthew (to say nothing of every one of the Beatitudes) on fire. And this is his conclusion.
The cruelty of this bill is historic.
It is significant to me that Wester's byline on the piece does not use his clerical honorific. He is writing as John C. Wester, U.S. citizenor, as one of us, albeit one of us with considerable moral leverage. Which can be put to political use at times like these, no matter what any trimmers and wafflers within the Church's bureaucracy might believe, and certainly no matter what is pronounced by the MAGA-curious conservatives in the American Church.
