(JEWISH GROUP) More antisemitic graffiti found in Hyde Park
The Chicago Police Department issued a community alert Tuesday after more antisemitic graffiti was discovered in Hyde Park, the latest in a series of incidents that began earlier this summer.
The most recent tag was found Aug. 25 in the 1300 block of East 53rd Street, police said. In total, eight incidents have been recorded since June 23, when a sticker with the words "Kill all Jews" written on it was placed on a mailbox outside the KAM Isaiah Israel synagogue, 5039 S. Greenwood Ave. Vandals have also tagged stop signs, mailboxes and other public property with similar phrases and ethnic slurs.
Police said the graffiti is being investigated as criminal damage to property and a hate crime. Area One detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the department at 312-747-8380 or submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com.
In a June statement, a coalition of local Jewish organizations said the graffiti horrified residents and sparked considerable distress across our diverse Jewish community. The groups said the messages targeted Jewish community members but harm us all, and urged neighbors to stand up to hate by reporting incidents to police.
The groups behind the statement include the Akiba-Schechter Jewish Day School, KAM Isaiah Israel, University of Chicago Hillel, Rohr Chabad at the University of Chicago, the Institute for Jewish Enrichment and Congregation Rodfei Zedek.
