Sturgis sets June 2 special election to fill mayor's seat

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - The Sturgis City Council has scheduled a special election for June 2 to fill the mayor’s office following Kevin Forrester’s resignation.

The decision came during a special meeting Wednesday. Council members chose not to appoint a replacement for now. Instead, Council President Tony Dargatz will continue serving as mayor pro tem until at least the council’s April 6 meeting, when an appointment may be discussed.

Forrester stepped down March 23, citing health concerns and a desire to spend more time with family. His departure created a vacancy in the city’s top elected position.

“It has been a true honor for me to serve as your mayor,” Forrester said in his resignation letter.
