Where is my gray image of a "non avatar?"

All I see now is an empty block.

I commented on this in the "announcement" thread

and shortly later I did have the gray image and now it is gone, again.

Other comments on the thread have nothing, only their usernames.

I think that there used to be a collections of avatars on this site but cannot even find them now.
