Back in the early 1600s my ancestor, the baron, told his 4 younger brothers, 'You're gone! I've bought 4 spots on this boat to the New World and you will be on it when it sails. And, furthermore, do not try to come back.' The four brothers did as they were told, the alternative wasn't pretty. They and their descendants actually did pretty well. Because, well, the alternative in the New World wasn't pretty either. No, England didn't send it's best. They sent the ones they didn't want.

The Spaniards started coming in the early 1500's and had taken over much of what is now the south and southwest with thriving colonies by the time the english began to get their foot on this continent. The english had two failed colonies before the pilgrims landed here, and that colony also came close to failure, if it hadn't been for some indigenous people helping them out.
