The Way Forward
Related: About this forumWhat Working-Class Voters Really Want (in the Liberal Patriot)
Democrats appear to have rediscovered the working class in the wake of the 2024 election. Their dismal showing among these votersboth white and nonwhitedoomed Kamala Harriss candidacy and got them, and the country, another term of Donald Trump. So now Democrats want those voters back, and theyre racking their brains trying to figure out how to sell their party to the working class. All factions of the partyfrom AOC and Bernie Sanders to the Blue Dogsare pitching their approach as the way Democrats can bring these voters back into the fold.
But perhaps, instead of trying to message their way into the hearts of Americas working class, they should first ask: what do these voters really want? Thats harder than it sounds because it entails suspending your ideologyand any conception of what these voters should wantso that you can find out what they do want.
The point about ideology is very important. Right now, Democrats are dominated by the most ideological voters in the countrywhite college-educated voters. Its no secret that Democrats have been doing increasingly well with white college-educated voters, even as theyve been slipping with nonwhite and working-class (noncollege) voters. Between the 2012 and 2024 elections, Democratic performance among white college graduates improved by 17 points, while declining by 37 points among nonwhite working-class voters.

(4,315 posts)...as we are clearly off track with many voters we need in the 2026 midterms. I think some Dem candidates have gotten the message that they need to veer and separate from the stated national Dem platform to speak better and more successfully connect with their constituency but this leaves the Dems looking a bit schizophrenic and tone deaf.

(17,237 posts)What is so hard about pressing these urgent issues, as AOC and Bernie have been doing with great success?
YES to raising the minimum wage,
YES to expanding Social Security,
YES to guaranteeing health care as a human right,
YES to cutting the cost of prescription drugs,
YES to paid family and medical leave,
YES to equal pay for equal work,
YES to more affordable housing,
YES to making childcare and higher education affordable to all,
YES to taking on the existential threat of climate change.
And most importantly they are saying
YES to a government and an economy that works for all of us and not just the billionaire class and the Oligarchs.

All Bernie's points are pointless...
without a plan...
Dems cannot wait until 2028...
to conjure a plan to topple the Krasnov regime...
Dems cannot wait until 2028...
to counter the damage done by Project 2025, Agenda 47, the Musketeer + DoGE...
Recognizing America needs to address the pressing issues Bernie + AOC are driving is great...
but where is the plan to make each and every one of those issues reality -- particularly in light of the damage
done to America's agency/bureaucratic/governmental infrastructure by Krasnov, the Musketeer + DoGE???
Because if there is no plan...
No details...
No action...
Dems are as guilty as Krasnov of making empty promises to the American people...
