10. A great question and simply stated, but it's waaaaaaaay too easy to get into

vastly oversimplified answers. Seasoned China-watchers in academia have dedicated their professional lives to answering your question.

Another, perhaps more rewarding and less strenuous approach, would be to learn from ordinary western folks who have made China their life.

I recommend watching a few of the YouTube videos by an American man who lived and worked in China for a decade, is married to a Chinese woman, and has a channel @laowhy86 on YouTube. He teams with a South African expat who also lived in China for a decade, has a Chinese wife, and owned his own consulting business in China. His YouTube channel is @serpentza. (Sorry, I can't think of their real names at the moment.... but seriously , check out their YouTube channels.)

Edited to Add: Both of them got out of China a little more than a year ago, after the Chinese Government started cracking down on foreigners living and working there.
