'We will not rubberstamp' Trump on Iran strikes, top Dems say [View all]

Top Senate Democrats are demanding President Donald Trump outline a strategy for dealing with Iran, saying the administration has left Congress in the dark as he weighs direct U.S. military involvement in the Israel’s campaign against Tehran.

The escalating conflict could spiral into a regional war and put thousands of U.S. troops in the Middle East at risk, five Democrats warned in a joint statement Wednesday that slammed the administration for “a lack of preparation, strategy, and clearly defined objectives” for any American involvement.

“Congress is an equal partner in preserving and defending U.S. national security around the world, and Congress has not provided authorization for military action against Iran — we will not rubberstamp military intervention that puts the United States at risk,” five senior Democratic senators said in a joint statement. “The United States cannot sleepwalk into a third war in as many decades.”

Signing the statement were Minority Leader Chuck Schumer; Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.); Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.); Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.); and Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.).
