If Colbert had been cancelled to appease Trump, he would not still be on for another ten months. I have no doubt that Colbert and his staff believe this story, but the fact is that late night TV has lost much of its audience from even just 5 years ago. Seth Myers only has 4 new shows a week. Conan O'Brien's show went from one hour to a half hour only to be cancelled last year. When shows cease being profitable, the end is near. I'm sure all of this will be great for the show's ratings, though and when the show ends in ten months Colbert will have lined up a fat new deal with another network.
