But I find this concept of “influencer” baffling

I follow this journalist I think is pretty cool Yasha Levine and his wife Evgenia Kovda..and they are very cool, but also in the grip of classic lefty imposter/purity syndrome. Levine is a serious journalist. I have read his book Surveillance Valley (which I would recommend to anyone interested in the military history of the net).

He is not an “influencer” imo so much as someone who the NYT etc would not hire.

Are old school oped columnists influencers? I used to vaguely think influencers sell products, so I am confused as to how Levine is one.

In fact it is such a ghastly concept that I ensure that any posts I make on DU tied to medications etc are strictly brand and marketing free. Advertising is ruining enough stuff as is.
