The things the public see Dems really passionate about are issues that animate 10% or 20% of the public. While the public agrees with the positions Dems take on most issues such as economic fairness, affordable health care, affordable education, good paying jobs, limiting the power of billionaires, gun violence and so on, they don't trust us to really fight for those things. When they look at Dems, they see passion in trans rights and abortions and not much else.

When Bernie, AOC and others go out to speak primarily on the issues that are at the top if mind for 80% of the public, they turn out by the tens of thousands. But then they see the Party apparatus attack these people as "too liberal". When David Hogg pushes to get candidates that really align with the majority of the public, the Party apparatus kicks him out.

We complain about the MSM that rarely gives Dems much opportunity to have a voice. Well, when Newsom was following a strategy of buddying up to the worst of the right-wingers as if we could hold hands and come together, neither the media nor the public wanted to hear any of that. But then when Newsom did a 180 and went on a ferocious trolling attack of Trump and his policies, suddenly people and the media are paying attention. Likewise for Pritzker. This is what they call a "clue".
