He keeps plausible deniability and avoids a direct lie as long as he can, but here are the signs he's working up to a lie and/or he's going to excuse himself for doing it:

I don't know anything about it
I don't even know the person
This doesn't matter, let's talk about something else
People could have done this or that to frame me
It's fake news
It's a hoax
It's a deep state conspiracy
We're suing the reporter/media outlet for reporting this
We're starting an investigation into someone else who did the thing I'm accused of
People do this all the time
Hillary/Biden/Obama did it
People are saying I should have done it
