7. Right-wing Republicans conveniently forget that many Hispanics have just as much right to be here as white people.

Of course we know that Republicans regularly rewrite history to support their backward policies.

When Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821, it gained a significant territory of what is now several states, including all of California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona, and parts of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. When gold was discovered in California, the US went to war against Mexico and won these territories with the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Texas became part of the US later. The people living in this part of the US became instant citizens.

Conservatives rant about how their white culture is at risk from too many Hispanics, but the peak of white European immigration to the US happened between 1815 and 1930. Hispanics have as much claim to US culture as white descendants of Europeans do.

Trump, Miller, and ICE may be going after undocumented people now, though they also attack and arrest US citizens, but they are becoming more lawless by the day. If the SC upholds Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship, no Hispanic person born in the US will be safe.
