My parents thought they had control if they had a job and dinner. They believed they were doing fine.

In the 80s you thought you were doing fine because there was no war and inflation was tamed.

In the 00s you worshipped debt because you could buy a McMansion.

In other words, everything being beyond your control is the normal state of affairs.
