(30,265 posts)47. The vast majority of people cannot have gardens large enough
to significantly reduce reliance on grocery stores. Millions of us live in apartments with no yard, are too old to comfortably plant/weed/water/harvest, and/or haven't the time to both learn how to preserve food and also to actually preserve it, not to mention the cost of canning supplies. Then there are storage issues; I don't have enough room in my small pantry to store six months of preserved foods. If you have room enough to plant enough food to get you through a winter, maintain the garden for four months, harvest and have the time, supplies, and knowledge to preserve food, you are pretty privileged.
