(884 posts)It is certainly true that my Trump-supporting neighbor, for example, is at worst an unwitting pawn in the horror inflicted by this administration. Actual malicious racism (on the part of people by whom he is informed) is arguably at play in his opposition to the things he opposes and support for the things he supports, yet he does not exhibit any signs of actual racism. And while that doesn't make his support of politicians on the basis of fantasy any less dangerous, it does make it less insidious.
The same, however, should never be implied of the likes of nazis and white supremacists.
And that, coincidentally, pretty well captures what so many who voted for Trump failed to register about the "deplorables" comment: That what makes one deplorable is not whom one supports.
It's WHY one supports them.
