You see them featured in Italy and Greece against the stucco walls by doorways. trained espalier-style, or spilling over stone walls. They are definitely full sun plants and that is why they thrive in places like Arizona too. It's just that they can form a thorny thicket - but then that was what they were used for - a "deterrent"!
