20. Tide caused massive eutrophication when it was introduced

Tide was designed by P&G chemists in the 40s or 50s (I can't recall exactly when) to be effective in washing machines. It had large amounts of phosphates, which of course got into our streams and rivers. The subsequent eutrophication was a disaster for these waterbodies. Ecologists proved that phosphorus contamination was the cause of the eutrophication problem and their was a campaign to remove the phosphorus from Tide and detergents like it. P&G fought that tooth and nail, but eventually lost.
