Critical National Weather Service staff would be classified as part of the nations public safety apparatus, like FBI agents and air traffic controllers, and protected from future reductions in force under a measure Rep. Mike Flood, R-Neb., introduced Friday.
The Weather Workforce Improvement Act, which has received bipartisan support from representatives of several other stormy states, also would grant the agency temporary direct hiring authority for positions important to public safety meteorologists, general physical scientists, hydrologists, computer specialists and electronic technicians.
I know this means a lot to the men and women of the National Weather Service, Flood said in a media call Friday. Theyve wanted this classification for a long time, and Im hopeful that we can get it done here in this Congress.
Flood got involved in weather service staffing in March, not long after officials at the National Weather Service office in Valley announced that they would stop twice-daily weather balloons because of staffing shortages.
