In reply to the discussion: 'Not a damned penny!' 'Abandoned' Texas flood survivors prepare to clash with officials [View all]Jirel
(2,356 posts)I live in that area and had to evacuate. The practically word salad article s not indicative in any way of what is going on here, on the ground, misses the hearing that was held YESTERDAY entirely (there were some important findings), and once again is some dreck written by people states away who havent set one foot here to talk to anyone who was affected, attend even press conferences or the hearing, or interview local/state/federal officials in the area.
Proactive preparation was not a problem. A huge problem was petitions granted to remove areas from flood maps because local capitalists wanted to build camps and resorts right on the banks (its sooooooo pretty!) where its known to flood rapidly, without any of the annoyances of flood insurance requirements, building requirements, etc. A huge problem that morning was all the guys who would normally be tasked with emergency messaging and response being on the job (2 out of town on holiday vaycay, one sick), and you couldnt even really blame them because 2 on vacation tried to do what they could as soon as they could, but nobody bothered calling them until 3 hours after the flood started taking out camps and homes and vacation spots. There were LOTS of stupid mistakes made, but it wasnt about proactive preparation. Lots to report, real info, but you couldnt tell from THIS article (or most others that arent from our area).
