He made scale models to test (good!) every one of them failed (bad!) He decided to go to full scale (unbelievable!)
The team from Boeing, the experts on carbon fiber, in reaction to the tests, said it would fail.
The team from the university told him it would fail.
His own experts told him it would fail. As one put it, “It was an arithmetic certainty.”
