"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declined US President Donald Trumps invite to attend a Gaza ceasefire ceremony in Egypt on Monday, citing time constraints ahead of the start of a public holiday.
The Prime Minister thanked President Trump for his efforts to expand the circle of peace, peace through strength, Netanyahus office said in a statement. The Egyptian presidency had said in an earlier statement that the Israeli leader would attend the event.
Israel waged war on Hamas in Gaza for two years after the groups militants swarmed into its territory, killing 1,200 people and taking some 250 hostage. On Monday, Hamas released its remaining 20 living captives, implementing the first stage of a US-led ceasefire deal reached late last week, with assistance from Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish mediators.
It was unclear whether Netanyahu backed out of traveling to the resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh, or whether the Egyptian side misinterpreted his willingness to go. Axios reported that Trump pushed Egyptian President Abdel- Fattah El-Sisi to invite the prime minister."
