I have also cut ties with a beloved brother after his 2024 vote. It’s painful and I’m sorry that your brother made the choice he did which leads you to create the distance that gives you safety and integrity.

My analogy: If your brother gave a rapist the keys to your house, you would not think that his action was in any way ok. You would understand that whatever his intentions and priorities, your welfare was not anywhere near the top of the list. And that you had to take steps to protect yourself and others in your situation. Without apology.

Our brother’s votes have given that racist rapist the keys to our country and our lives. It is NOT ok. We do not have to enable or normalize the harm they have done by pretending nothing has changed. They are morally disengaged “good Germans” following a sociopathic dictator. It’s heartbreaking but nonetheless inexcusable.
