My Mom had to take down her curtains for offending the authorities' sense of "decorum". She was told she was a vain and show-offy person - simply for not going along with the white lace curtains of the herd. A couple of years later she managed to escape from behind the Iron Curtain just as Russian tanks were rolling into Czechkoslovakia next door. True story.
