. . . . it could somehow get into the porcelain and maybe unglue the hair or some such.

A gentler approach for sticker glue is lighter fluid. I am sure you can get it at any CVS type store. I have a container that is years and years old. As long as it is sealed, it will last forever. Has lots of uses and generally will not harm finishes.
